There are few places in Hawaii that feel quite like Lānaʻi.  It’s incredibly quiet, beautiful, private and a very removed from everything else. It also happens to be a stunning place to propose.

I’m a Maui based couples photographer and recently, I flew over from Maui to photograph and help plan a surprise Lānaʻi proposal for a couple staying at Sensei Lānaʻi. We planned everything ahead of time so that when the moment came, all he had to do was show up with the ring.

And she had absolutely no idea.

Planning a Surprise Proposal on Lānaʻi

One of my favorite parts of photographing proposals is actually helping plan them.

If you’re coming to Hawaii from somewhere else, figuring out where to propose, what time to go, how you’re going to get your partner there without making them suspicious, and where your photographer is supposed to be can feel like a lot.

That’s where I come in.

For this proposal, we coordinated the location, timing and logistics ahead of time. I flew from Maui to Lānaʻi that day, got into position, and photographed the entire proposal without giving away the surprise.

Once she said yes, we turned the rest of the evening into an engagement session around one of the most beautiful parts of the island.

A Sweetheart Rock Proposal

We photographed around Puʻu Pehe, better known as Sweetheart Rock, overlooking the dramatic coastline near Hulopoʻe Bay.

It’s hard to imagine a more fitting place for a proposal.

The cliffs, blue water and open landscape feel incredibly dramatic, but Lānaʻi itself is so peaceful that it never feels overly busy or touristy. It’s especially beautiful later in the day as the light softens.

After the proposal, we explored the coastline and beach together, which gave us a mix of candid photographs from the actual proposal and relaxed portraits afterward.

Although I’m based on Maui, I photograph proposals, weddings and elopements throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and I’m always happy to travel to Lānaʻi.

In fact, Lānaʻi is one of my favorite places for this kind of experience because it can feel much more secluded than some of Hawaii’s busier destinations.

You can stay somewhere incredible like Sensei Lānaʻi or Four Seasons Resort Lānaʻi, plan an entire romantic getaway around the proposal, and create something that feels genuinely intimate.

And you don’t have to figure everything out yourself.
