I grew up on Maui, and have photographed hundreds of weddings on Maui and many on Oahu, Kauai, Lanai and the Big Island. This guide will provide you with every beach on each Hawaiian island where weddings and elopements can take place, complete with a direct Google Maps link so you can easily explore and research each location.
If you are planning on getting married or eloping on a beach in Hawaii, one of the first questions you will ask is which beaches are actually allowed for weddings? The good news is, most public beaches in Hawaii are allowed for a wedding or elopement ceremony, with the proper permit called the Wiki Permit.
The Wiki Permit is what you will need when getting married on the beach. It is issued by the State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources and is required. Most professional vendors including photographers, officiants, and wedding planners can obtain this permit for you. There only needs to be one permit per event.
Keep in mind there are rules with the permit which you must follow. Below I have also listed some of the main important rules, and from the link you can read all about the details.
Important Rules with the Wiki Permit
Strict time limit (max 2 hours total)
Less than 30 people total, including all vendors (over 30 requires special approval)
No setups, structures, arches, chairs, or equipment allowed
No amplified sound or powered devices
No alcohol is allowed
Full cleanup and restoration is required, “leave no trace”
Loose flowers, flower circle, and such allowed as long as it’s fully removed
Beaches are public, no guaranteed privacy at any beach
A Hawaii beach wedding permit does NOT give you control of the beach, it only gives you permission to hold a short, minimal-impact ceremony in a public space.
Below I have listed every single beach that is listed on the Wiki Permit, and therefore allowed for your wedding ceremony.
Click the link to the beach to view it on Google Maps where you can see photos of the beach, and when you click on the “yellow man” you can get a good idea of the beach by viewing the “street view” of the beach and area.
I have personally photographed weddings and elopements at many of these beaches, if you want to learn more about which beaches are stunning for photos, be sure to get in touch with me and we can start envisioning your day.
