If you’re planning a Hawaii wedding or elopement, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is whether to get married at sunrise or sunset.
As a Maui wedding and elopement photographer who grew up here, I’ve photographed hundreds of weddings and elopements across Hawaii, including many sunset ceremonies and about a dozen sunrise celebrations. Both are beautiful, but they create completely different experiences and feelings for your day.
There isn’t a right or wrong choice. It simply comes down to the type of experience you want to have.
Most couples choose a sunset wedding or sunset elopement in Hawaii, and it’s easy to see why.
A sunset ceremony allows you to enjoy a relaxed day. You can sleep in, have breakfast together, spend time at the pool or beach, and begin getting ready in the afternoon. After your ceremony, you can head straight to a celebratory dinner at one of Hawaii’s incredible oceanfront restaurants.
For many couples, this feels natural and stress-free.
On Maui (and most Hawaiian islands), sunset beach weddings are especially beautiful on the west and south shores. In these locations, the sun often drops directly into the ocean, creating the classic Hawaiian sunset that many couples envision when planning their destination wedding.
If you’re on the north or east side of an island, the sun will often disappear behind mountains before it reaches the horizon. The light is still beautiful, but you may not get that dramatic golden glow right above the water.
One thing you might not realize is that beaches in Hawaii are public.
By sunset, beaches are usually beginning to clear out, but there will often still be people swimming, walking, watching the sunset, surfing, or enjoying the beach. It’s usually possible to find a quieter stretch of beach, but there may be other weddings, elopements, family portraits, or visitors nearby, especially at popular locations.
As your photographer and guide, I help my couples choose locations and timing that maximize privacy while still giving you incredible scenery and light.
Sunrise elopements have an entirely different feel. They’re peaceful, quiet, intimate, and often feel like you have the island all to yourselves.
The tradeoff? It’s an early morning. Very early.
If sunrise is at 5:45 AM, you’ll often begin hair and makeup around 2:00–3:00 AM and arrive at your ceremony location around 5:15–5:30 AM. Hair and makeup artists in Hawaii are accustomed to sunrise weddings, but they typically charge an early morning fee. You’ll also usually need to pick up your flowers the day before.
The biggest advantage of a sunrise wedding is privacy. Most beaches are nearly empty. You may see only a few people, or oftentimes nobody at all.
The winds also tend to be calmer in the early morning, creating a peaceful atmosphere and often making hair, veils, and dresses much easier to manage. There is something incredibly special about exchanging vows while the island is still waking up.
From a photography perspective, both are wonderful. See the photos below of what the difference looks like.
One thing to keep in mind is that the sun rises in the east. On islands with large mountain ranges, the sun may not immediately appear over the ocean.
For example, on Maui, Haleakalā often blocks the sun from view for a period of time after the official sunrise. You still receive beautiful soft morning light before the sun appears, and then a second look once the sunlight begins peeking over the mountain.
Sunset creates warm golden tones and colorful skies.
Sunrise creates soft, peaceful light and often feels more intimate. I genuinely love photographing both.
One of my favorite things about sunrise weddings is what comes next.
You have your entire wedding day ahead of you.
You can go out for a beautiful breakfast, spend the day exploring Hawaii together, relax at your resort, snorkel, hike, or simply enjoy being newly married without any schedule or pressure. Many couples tell me this becomes one of their favorite parts of the experience.
If you want a relaxed schedule, dinner afterward, and the classic Hawaii sunset experience, sunset is probably the best fit.
If you want privacy, calm beaches, fewer people, and an incredibly peaceful atmosphere, sunrise may be perfect.
The good news is that there isn’t a wrong choice. Both create beautiful photographs and unforgettable memories.
As someone who grew up on Maui and has photographed weddings and elopements throughout Hawaii, I love helping couples figure out which option fits their personalities, priorities, and vision for their day.
If you’re planning a Maui elopement, Hawaii beach wedding, destination wedding in Hawaii, or intimate wedding ceremony, I’d love to hear what you’re dreaming up and help guide you toward the best locations, timing, and experience for your day.
Neither is better. Sunrise offers more privacy and calmer conditions, while sunset offers a more relaxed schedule and classic ocean sunset views.
Most couples begin getting ready between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM depending on the sunrise time and travel distance.
Yes. Sunrise is typically the least crowded time of day at Hawaii beaches.
Yes. Most couples choose sunset ceremonies because they fit more naturally into a vacation schedule.
Both provide beautiful light. Sunrise is softer and more peaceful, while sunset is warmer and more dramatic.
Absolutely. Most Hawaii wedding hair and makeup artists regularly accommodate sunrise ceremonies.
All Hawaii beaches are public, but choosing the right location and timing can create a much more private experience.
The south and west sides of Maui generally provide the best ocean sunset views.
The south, east, and north shores can all work beautifully depending on the location and season.
Most couples begin planning anywhere from a few months to a year in advance, especially if they want popular dates, locations, and vendors.
